To compare the sizes of individual communities, we have used the Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey for each group “alone” (see chart below). The “alone” groups (people who classified themselves only as “American Indian and Alaska Native,” rather than as belonging to more than one classification, such as American Indian and White) have grown to 3.2 million people, 1.1% of the U.S. The Census reported that according to its 2021 American Community Survey, American Indians and Alaska Natives-alone and in combination with other races-constituted 8.7 million people, 2.6% of the U.S.
